I have tried this too, and with SSMIII on my laptop, I cannot communicate with my Subaru's OBDII connector.
I have tried a couple of USB to OBD converter cables but still no luck. The converter cables work with other software on my laptop, but not with SSMIII.
Other forums suggest converters, but these originate in the USA and say that their Subaru's do not use the CAN protocol.
My U.K. registered 2008 Diesel Outback DOES use the CAN protocol.
I don't fancy paying out £300 for a V2015.10 VXDIAG Subaru SSM-III Diagnostic Tool when even this may not work.
Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks.
Steve

Hi Steve. Looks like the cheapest option apart from dealer tool to use ssmIII dealer software is THIS .
But you can get a handheld tool like THIS.

Hope this helps.

Dx. Cool

What is the password for SSM?
It is useless without authentication or am I doing something wrong?
